Records of Margaret Marshall Saunders

Will the real author please stand up and be recognized?

As a means of disguising her identity, Margaret Marshall Saunders was published under a male pseudonym.  But, we are not fooled by this.

In 1886, Saunders' first work, called "A Gag of Blessed Memory", was published in Frank Leslie’s Magazine. "My Spanish Sailor", her first novelette, was well received by The Scotsman. When her novelette was published in 1889, the publishers decided to change her name to Marshall Saunders, to defeminise Maggie. "Beautiful Joe" published in 1894 by American Baptist Publication Society and was the first Canadian book to become World’s Bestseller as well as the first Canadian book to sell over one million copies and to achieve multiple translations.

The Archival Records

The records consist of personal papers, such as diaries, correspondence, and photographs, as well as hand written manuscripts of full-length and short stories.   "Beautiful Joe" in various formats, including braille, forms part of these records.  There are two groups of records available:

1. personal papers (1866-1943)

2. manuscripts [1986? –19--]
