Library Checklist

  • Meet your Librarian
At Acadia each academic department has a librarian specializing in that subject area to assist the faculty and students. Find your librarian and drop by for a chat during office hours or at the reference desk.
  • Network Access and Wireless
In order to access all the resources available electronically from the library, you must have your network access setup and you need to be on the secure wireless signal.
  • Set up your printer
Sometimes installing the printer can take a few minutes, so be sure to install the library printer on your laptop early in the term. Please note that students using home editions of Windows may have issues with retaining saved passwords and may have to reinstall.
  • Register for Interlibrary Loan Services
If we don't have the book or article you need, we can get it for you! Register for this free service asap.
  • Try out our new catalogue
Our new library catalogue lets you search for books, electronic resources and journal articles at the same time. Material available at Acadia comes up first, but you can easily order materials from other libraries with just one click.
  • Know the best resources
To get the best grades on your assignments and lab reports, use articles that you find in our databases and ejournal collections rather than information from the web.
  • Off campus access
If you live off campus or want to do some research or school work at a local coffee shop, you must set up the VPN to access all the library's full text journals and databases.
  • Get help whenever and wherever you need it
On September 20, 2010, Acadia will be joining Novanet's Live Help service which provides chat reference services to university and college students all across Nova Scotia.
  • Sign up for a RefWorks account
RefWorks and Zotero are tools available to you to help you organize your references and cite them in the proper format. Spending a little time setting this software up can save you hours later in the year.
  • Understand and Avoid Plagiarism
Plagiarism can range from forgetting to use quotes to buying papers on the web. Acadia takes academic dishonesty very seriously, know the facts.
